RONDA — Senior night for the East Wilkes Cardinals didn’t go as planned, as the Elkin Lady Elks came into town and put down a 3-0 sweep — 25-18, 25-23, 25-11. East Wilkes (2-16, 1-10) wanted the win to break its five-game losing streak, while Elkin (6-10, 5-7) came into the match with a two-game losing streak, which proved to be enough motivation to earn the win.
In the first set, Elkin and East Wilkes traded volleys in a competitive manner. Catie Beth Brown started things off with an ace for Elkin. Katie Prevette put down a kill for the Cardinals to try and put a stop Elkin’s momentum. With the score sitting at 2-1, Elkin decided to turn up the heat.
Brown earned an ace and a tip to give Elkin a 5-1 lead. Prevette once again stopped Elkin’s scoring drive with a kill for a 5-2 score. The score kept going back and forth until the Lady Elks took their biggest lead of the first set as Katherine Jennings put down a huge kill. Elkin had the win in its sight as Jessica Eldridge put down a tip and a kill to hand Elkin the first set win 25-18.
With the match sitting 1-0 in Elkin’s favor, East Wilkes knew the next set could be the turning point if it wanted to come away with the match win. The Cardinals started the second set with a renewed energy to jump out to a 6-4 lead over Elkin. Although the Cardinals put down a flurry of offensive plays, Elkin was able to fight back to take the lead half way through the set.
The Lady Elks took a 12-10 lead over East Wilkes and never looked back. The Cardinals almost tied the set with kills by Prevette, Aubri Smithey and Aubrey Wallis, but Elkin put down its final kill courtesy of Jennings to take the 25-23 win.
The final set was all Elkin, as the Lady Elks outplayed the Cardinals to take a 25-11 win. Elkin was on a roll with an 11-4 lead over East Wilkes when Brown made a great reaction play for the Lady Elks. Brown went up for a block and tripped on her way down, before she could get back up to her feet the ball was coming to her again for a set. Brown played the ball sitting down to Savannah Abbey who put the ball down for an Elkin point. From there, Elkin put on a show to take a conference win over East Wilkes.
East Wilkes’ Prevette put down seven kills, while Smithey put down four, Wallis put down three, and Corey Spicer put down one. On the serving side, Prevette earned three aces, while Darnell earned one.
For Elkin, Jennings ended her night with 11 kills, and two aces. Brown earned several tip kills, and three aces. While Abbey earned one kill, and Jessica Eldridge earned four kills. Kyley Cook put down three aces for the Lady Elks, as Kenley Jackson also served an ace.
