With the North Carolina High School Athletic Association football playoffs in full swing, the Buckin’ Elks Wrestling Team is at present missing several of its members. Seven Elks competed this weekend in the fourth annual Perry Lloyd Invitational.
Fielding only half of a team, Elkin managed to claim fourth place in the team standings out of a field of nine schools representing each of the four high school classifications.
Elkin was paced by seniors Jude Lloyd and Ethan Chipman, who each earned individual titles at 138 pounds and 152 pounds, respectively. Lloyd also was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament by vote of the coaches.
Lloyd pinned Carrington Ramseur of R.J. Reynolds and defeated Freedom’s Benjamin Dula 15-0 to advance to the finals. He claimed a 4-to-1 victory over North Surry’s Quinn Walker to claim his third consecutive Perry Lloyd Invitational title.
Chipman pinned Sylfredo Hernandez of Glenn and earned a 3-to-1 decision over Surry Central’s Matthew White to reach the finals. After three scoreless periods, Chipman managed to take down Mount Airy’s Chris Butera to earn a sudden victory win.
Ryan Patterson took third place at 126 pounds with an 18-to-9 victory over Mount Airy’s Daniel Olvera. Marcus Orta also placed third at 132 pounds by defeating North Surry’s Adam Martin 1-0.
