The Lady Cardinals softball team traveled the short distance to Elkin to take on the Lady Elks on Friday afternoon. East Wilkes came out swinging at the plate to take a 14-3 win over Elkin in six innings.

In the first inning, Lyric Ryan was able to bring Lauren Rakes across the plate for a 1-0 East Wilkes lead. East Wilkes added four runs in the second inning for a 5-0 lead over Elkin.

Jenna Bullard brought three runs in for the Cardinals in the second inning. Bullard doubled to center field to bring Samantha Carter, Krysta Prevette and Rakes in to score. With two outs, Alexa Carter brought Bullard across the plate to round out the second inning.

East Wilkes added three runs in the third inning as Bullard once again stepped up to the plate. Bullard hit a triple to center field to clear the bases and make the score 8-0.

In the fifth inning, Bullard kept her impressive game going with a single to center field to bring a run in. With the score sitting 9-0 in East Wilkes’ favor, Megan Losito singled to shortstop to bring Rakes in for the 10th Cardinals run. East Wilkes was able to put another run on the board before the fifth inning was over, as Carter hit a sacrifice hit to bring in Bullard.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Elkin was able to put three runs on the board. Casey Matthews singled to right filed to bring Kyley Cook across the plate. With two outs on the board, Audrey Jennings and Matthews stole home to make the score 11-3.

Although Elkin was able to score three runs, the Cardinals knocked in three runs of their own in the sixth inning. Ryan singled to left field to bring Carter in, then Bullard singled to bring in Prevette. The Cardinals were able to take a 14-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Elkin was able to get one runner on base in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Lady Elks were unable to bring a run in to score. The 10-run rule was put into effect and the Cardinals took a 14-3 win.

With the win, East Wilkes sits at 3-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference and 5-2 overall. Elkin moves to 1-3 in the MVAC, and 1-3 overall.
