Starmount soccer advances to third round

BOONVILLE — On Saturday afternoon, the Starmount Lady Rams hosted Highlands High School in the second round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1A Soccer Playoffs. As temperatures soared towards 90 degrees off the field, the Lady Rams were also hot on the field as they took a 5-1 win of the Highlanders.

Starmount was able to control possession early and managed to get several shots on goal within the opening 10 minutes. Although Starmount had a majority of the shots, Highlands was able to score the first goal of the night. With 29:44 remaining in the first half, Highlands took a 1-0 lead.

It didn’t take long for Starmount to come together and score the tying goal, and then the go-ahead goal. Before the first half was completed, the Lady Rams scored four goals. The first goal came as Elizabeth Solorzano scored off the assist of Maggie Freed to tie the game, 1-1.

From that point on, it was all about the Lady Rams. With 23:51 left in the half, Sierra Casstevens scored off the assist of Alyssa Yanez to give Starmount a 2-1 lead. Brooklyn Swaim would then score a goal off the assist of Yanez to increase the Lady Rams’ lead to 3-1.

The Rams’ final goal of the first half came off the foot of Irene Villanueva Adame, who scored off the assist of Yanez. At halftime, Starmount had a commanding 4-1 lead over Highlands.

The Lady Rams added another goal in the second half with 17:28 remaining. Adame was able to score her second goal of the afternoon as she was assisted by Jackie Catalan. Starmount was able to hang on for the rest of the game to take a 5-1 win.

With the win, the Lady Rams improve their overall record to 15-4 and advanced to the third round where they will host Community School of Davidson. The game is set for Tuesday night at Starmount, results were not available by press deadline.
