RONDA — It was an East Wilkes dominated night for the women’s basketball team as the Cardinals put up a 50-12 win over the Lady Elks. East Wilkes held Elkin to just two points in the first two quarters, eight in the third, and two in the fourth.

With a team like East Wilkes, a dominating performance on the court is not surprising. The Lady Cardinals have only lost one game in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference, and two games overall. The Lady Cardinals dominated the court on Friday night to earn their sixth conference win of the season.

East Wilkes put up 17 points in the first quarter and held Elkin to zero. Lauren Johnson started things off with a three-point shot, and Leah Nance followed it up with a three-pointer of her own. East Wilkes kept pushing towards the basket on offense, and on defense, it kept the Lady Elks from making a move towards the basket. East Wilkes went with a full court press as soon as the game started, and Elkin couldn’t seem to handle the pressure from the Cards. East Wilkes stole the ball the first four times Elkin tried to make it past half court.

The Lady Elks changed their game plan as Catie Beth Brown took the ball down the court. Chloe Osborne and Kyley Cook were her support, and the Lady Elks made it down the court. Audrey Jennings put up the shot for Elkin, but it didn’t fall through and East Wilkes was able to come up with the rebound. As the first quarter went on, East Wilkes put up shot after shot to take a 17-0 lead over Elkin.

The Lady Elks were able to put up several shots in the second quarter, but the ball never found its way through the hoop. It wasn’t until the seventh minute of the second quarter that Elkin put a basket through the hoop. Cook found a shot for the Lady Elks, and put Elkin on the board. East Wilkes kept putting up successful shots of its own and the Lady Cardinals were able to make the score 33-2 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the time read 4:25 when Elkin was able to score again. Jennings knocked in a three-point shot then followed it up with a shot from the post to make the score 43-7. Cook put in a three-pointer with two minutes left in the third for a 43-10 score. In the fourth, Brown put up Elkin’s only basket as time was winding down. East Wilkes put up seven points in the fourth, to take a 50-12 win over Elkin.

Elkin moves to 2-14 overall and 0-7 in the MVAC. The Lady Elks hosted Alleghany on Tuesday night, and results were not available by press deadline. On Friday night, Elkin will host Starmount.
