The Elkin men’s basketball team has struggled to find a win this season. On Wednesday night, the Buckin’ Elks (0-9, 0-4) lost 65-53 to North Stokes (7-0) after a hard-fought four quarters. Elkin went 22-39 in shooting attempts, 7-14 at the three-point line, and 2-6 from the free throw line.

Elkin came out firing in the first quarter to take a lead over North Stokes. Tevin Harris put up two points, then followed that up with a three-point basket to give Elkin a 5-2 lead. North Stokes didn’t let the Buckin’ Elks get comfortable with the lead, as the Vikings went on a scoring run and put up several baskets. Austin Longworth was able to put in Elkin’s final basket of the first quarter to make the score 9-7, but the Vikings kept driving. North Stokes was able to take a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Before halftime, Elkin added 10 points to its total while North Stokes added 15. Longworth, Harris, Jaylen Mayes, and Maston Renegar all put up points for Elkin. At halftime, North Stokes had a 35-17 lead over the Buckin’ Elks.

The third quarter saw Elkin outscore North Stokes 15-14, as the Buckin’ Elks started to work together all across the court. Elkin was able to pull within six points of the Vikings before North Stokes took off once again. At the end of the quarter, North Stokes was hanging on to a 49-32 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the tide started to shift, but time wasn’t on Elkin’s side. Shane Price put in three three-point shots within a span of a minute to bring Elkin closer to North Stokes. With the score now sitting at 56-45, Elkin started to pick up its momentum piece by piece. The Vikings kept driving to the basket, but Elkin kept fighting back on offense and defense. As time wound down, Elkin had given the game every ounce of energy it had, but the Vikings were able to take a 65-53 win.

Elkin moves to 0-9 overall. The Buckin’ Elks will play in the Cook’s Holiday Classic Tournament Dec. 27-29 at Starmount High School.
