Things didn’t go the way the Lady Elks wanted on Tuesday night in Elkin as the West Wilkes Blackhawks rolled into town. It was the first Mountain Valley Athletic Conference game of the season, and the Blackhawks came out with a purpose and took a 62-46 win over Elkin.
In the first quarter, things sat at 1-1 for three minutes as both teams starting shaking off their nerves. West Wilkes was able to break the tie with a scoring run to take a 5-1 lead over Elkin. The Lady Elks put up a fight to get back into the first quarter as Audrey Jennings put up a two-point basket to make the score 5-3. West Wilkes didn’t hold back on its next few possessions as the Blackhawks took a 15-3 lead. Elkin once again fought its way out of the hole as Kyley Cook made a basket, followed by a three-point shot by Chloe Osborne and another two-point shot by Osborne. At the end of the first, West Wilkes had a 15-10 lead over Elkin.
West Wilkes and Elkin put on a show in the second quarter as the Blackhawks put up 14 points and the Lady Elks put up 10. Cook put up a two-point basket for the first shot of the second quarter to make the score 17-12. Elkin was able to bring the score within three points as Catie Beth Brown put in two free throws to make the score 19-16. From there, West Wilkes went on another scoring run to make the score 29-16. Elkin was able to put up four points before the second quarter was up as Osborne and Flores both put up a two-point shot. At halftime, West Wilkes had a 29-20 lead over Elkin.
The third quarter saw West Wilkes come out of the gate firing shot after shot. The Blackhawks outscored Elkin 20-6 to take a 49-26 lead. In the final quarter, Elkin was able to fight its way back into the game to outscore West Wilkes 20-13. Osborne came off of the bench to put up two three-point baskets for Elkin which made the score 49-32. Osborne continued putting up shots for the Lady Elks as she had the first eight points of the fourth quarter. The effort by the Lady Elks wasn’t enough as West Wilkes was able to put up a fight and hang on to a 62-46 win.
Elkin moves to 0-3 overall, and 0-1 in the MVAC. Elkin will travel to Sparta to take on Alleghany on Friday night.
