The Elkin Buckin’ Elks baseball team played two conference games last week. On Thursday night, the Elks hosted West Wilkes, and on Friday, Elkin traveled to Ashe County.
West Wilkes 7 – Elkin 5
The Elks took on the Blackhawks and came away with a 7-5 Mountain Valley Athletic Conference loss.
West Wilkes jumped on the lead early in the first inning, as the Blackhawks put down two runs. In the second inning, West Wilkes put down an additional three runs to take a 5-0 lead.
Elkin was able to jump on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Hayden Brooks stole home for the first Elkin run of the night.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Elkin turned up its momentum as the Buckin’ Elks added three runs to the board. The first run came as Brooks hit a hard ball to the second baseman to earn a double. Brooks’ hit drove Tyler Wood across the plate for Elkin. Coy Yarboro brought Brooks home on the next at-bat as he hit a line drive to left field. With the score 6-3, Elkin added another run as Moore doubled to left field to score Yarboro. At the end of the sixth inning, Elkin had cut West Wilkes’ lead to two runs.
West Wilkes was able to add its final run in the seventh inning to take a 7-4 lead over Elkin.
The Buckin’ Elks came into the bottom of the inning with a renewed passion, as the bats started flying. Elkin started off the inning with three walks which loaded the bases. Wyatt Jester stepped up to the plate and singled on a line drive to bring Henderson into score.
With the score sitting 7-5, the Buckin’ Elks had two runners on base and one out on the board. West Wilkes was able to turn a double play to end the game and take a 7-5 win over Elkin.
Ashe County 4 – Elkin 3
On Friday night, Elkin traveled to West Jefferson to take on the Ashe County Huskies in its final conference game of the regular season.
Elkin put down runs early in the first inning, as Henderson and Wood both scored for the Buckin’ Elks. Ashe County was able to cut Elkin’s lead in half in the bottom of the first inning with a run of its own. With a 2-1 score on the board, Ashe County tied the game in the bottom of the second inning.
The back-and-forth momentum continued, as Elkin was able to put down its third run in the third inning. Hege singled to bring Moore across the plate for a 3-2 Elkin lead. As soon as Elkin took the lead, Ashe County was able to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.
In the fourth inning, Ashe County put down its final run of the night to take a 4-3 lead. As the game went on, defense for both teams stepped up on the field. The final three innings saw each team go three-up three-down until the game was over and Ashe County took a 4-3 win over Elkin.
Elkin ends its regular season with an overall record of 4-16 and a conference record of 4-10.
