East Wilkes baseball takes 11-2 win over Elkin

The Elkin Buckin’ Elks hosted the East Wilkes Cardinals on Friday night in the first meeting of the season between the two teams. The Cardinals came out swinging to take an 11-2 Mountain Valley Athletic Conference win over the Buckin’ Elks.

Things started off on the right foot for the Cardinals in the first inning. Sean Sidden was walked, and on the next at-bat was moved to second base as Ben Longbottom made a sacrifice hit. Things took a turn for the better for the Cardinals, as the next hit set the tone for the rest of the game. Bryce Vestal stepped up to the plate and on the first pitch found the sweet spot. The ball flew over the center-field fence for a two-run homer. The Cardinals were able to take an early 2-0 lead over the Buckin’ Elks.

In the bottom of the second inning, Elkin was able to pull within one run of the Cardinals. Colt Henderson stole home to score Elkin’s first run of the night. With the score 2-1 in East Wilkes’ favor, the defensive sides started to pick up on the field. Neither team was able to advance a run around the bases in the second inning, but the third inning things changed.

East Wilkes knocked in two runs in the third inning, as Tate Weatherman doubled to center field. Weatherman’s hit brought James Burcham and Brandon Church in to score for the Cardinals. While East Wilkes was able to bring runners in, the Buckin’ Elks struggled at the plate. Elkin went three-up three-down in the third inning.

The fourth inning saw the Cardinals turn up the heat. Caeden Howell started off the inning with a double to right field. Jared Wood followed up with a double of his own, which put Howell on third base. Sidden was able to step up and bring a run in with a sacrifice hit. East Wilkes brought another run across the plate as Longbottom doubled to center field to make the score 6-1.

The Cardinals kept things going as Burcham singled and brought a run in, then Weatherman doubled to score two runs. East Wilkes was able to make the score 9-1 after a successful fourth inning.

Elkin was able to put one run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Coy Yarboro put down a sacrifice hit which brought Wyat Jester across the plate. The Buckin’ Elks put down a run to make the score 9-2 after four innings.

As the game went on, East Wilkes added two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Deven Couch hit a single to bring Burcham across the plate, then Weatherman stole home for the final East Wilkes run.

Elkin tried to bring runners across the plate in the final two innings, but the hits didn’t fall in the Elks’ favor. At the end of the game, East Wilkes was able to take an 11-2 win over the Buckin’ Elks.

With the win, East Wilkes moves to 3-1 in the MVAC and 5-6 overall. Elkin sits at 2-2 in the MVAC and 2-5 overall.
