HICKORY — The Catawba Valley Community College baseball program has named its captains for the spring 2018 season.
Elkin graduate Daniel Brinegar was named one of four captains for the Red Hawks this season. Brinegar is a catcher/outfielder for Catawba Valley, and is a redshirt sophomore. He played in 31 games this past spring season where he carried a .370 batting average, hit three home runs, drove in 14 RBIs, scored 24 runs and stole six bases.
Brinegar is joined by pitchers Julian Smith and Hunter Isaacs and third basemen Graham Mitchell. These players were all voted captains by their teammates following the fall 2017 baseball season for the Red Hawks.
“We take the naming of our captains very seriously here,” said fourth-year CVCC head baseball coach Paul Rozzelle. “They have been put in this position by their peers in how they carry themselves on and off the field as well as their level of play. We are very excited to watch these guys lead by example.”
Smith, a left-handed pitcher from Concord, recently committed to North Carolina State University. Coming off Tommy John Surgery last year, Smith’s fastball touched 94 miles per hour during his first outing of this past fall season.
A right-handed starter from Boone, Isaacs improved his command and ability to throwing strikes this past fall, giving up just one run on the mound in more than 10 innings pitched.
A redshirt sophomore from Greenville, South Carolina, Mitchell batted .316 last spring with five home runs, 34 RBIs, 21 runs scored and two stolen bases in 45 games played.
The Red Hawks open their 2018 baseball season on Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. with a home doubleheader against Piedmont International JV team at Henkel-Alley Field.
