Field goal propels Elkin past Eagles

Elkin football hosted Wilkes Central on Friday night for a tough Mountain Valley Athletic Conference battle. The Buckin’ Elks were able to take a late win over the Eagles, as Brady Shugart hit a 23-yard field goal for the win.

The Buckin’ Elks took the lead with eight minutes to go in the first quarter, as Boone Beaver made his way into the end zone for a 12-yard run. The extra point attempt was completed by Shugart, which gave the home team a 7-0 lead.

Four minutes later, Elkin made its way back into the end zone, as Brett Beaver completed a three-yard pass to Maston Renegar for the touchdown. Shugart once again put his kick through the up rights and Elkin had a 14-0 lead over Wilkes Central.

As the game went into the second quarter, both teams played hard defensively. On the offensive side of the ball, Wilkes Central was able to capitalize on its late drive to put in a touchdown with less than two minutes until halftime. As the quarter ended, Wilkes Central had cut Elkin’s lead to one touchdown.

The third quarter saw Wilkes Central put the tying touchdown in the end zone with less than three minutes left. With the score tied 14-14, both teams started to pick up their tempo.

For the next several minutes, the Buckin’ Elks were able to make their way down the field and into the red zone as the fourth quarter approached. Elkin’s third quarter drive extended into the fourth quarter, as the home team kept picking up first downs.

The drive by Elkin was stalled out and the Buckin’ Elks sent out its field goal unit to put the ball in motion. The kick by Shugart sailed through the uprights and Elkin put three points on the board to take a 17-14 lead over Wilkes Central.

As the fourth quarter rolled on, Elkin was able to take a knee to see the game out and take a 17-14 win over the Eagles.

With the win, Elkin moves to 1-2 in the MVAC and 4-3 overall. Elkin will host North Wilkes on Friday night for Homecoming.
