RONDA — Ava Tharpe, an East Wilkes junior, concluded her undefeated 2018 season at the final Mountain Valley Athletic Conference match on Oct. 3. Tharpe captured All Conference honors and came away with a medal at the match. She also received Player of the Year for the 2018 season.

Tharpe fired a four under par 34, outdistancing her nearest competition by nine shots. As a team, the Cardinals placed third in the conference standings with a score of 818 points. Alleghany claimed the top spot with 751 points and Ashe County finished in second with 776 points.

Tharpe led the Cardinal contingency that included Laci Anderson and Haleigh Simpson. Anderson shot a 54 and Simpson delivered a 72. Tharpe and Anderson will compete for East Wilkes at the NCHSAA 1A/2A Central Regionals at Cedarbrook.

“I am really excited and blessed to compete at Regionals on my home course,” said Tharpe. “I hope I play well enough to qualify for the state championships.”
