BOONVILLE — As the 2018 regular season winds down, the Starmount soccer team has been playing for the top spot in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. The Rams played two important games which helped determine their spot heading into the final weeks of play. On Tuesday night, the Rams hosted Wilkes Central for the top spot and on Wednesday afternoon the Rams hosted Elkin in another MVAC game.
Starmount 4 – Wilkes Central 3
The Tuesday night game was a battle for the top spot in the MVAC. Starmount came into the game with an undefeated MVAC record of 6-0, while the Eagles had a record of 5-1. It was an 80-minute battle on both sides of the field as both teams wanted the top spot. The Rams were able to tie the game 2-2 at halftime, then take the lead for a 4-3 win.
Wilkes Central came out strong as soon as the opening whistle blew. The visiting team knocked in a goal to take a 1-0 lead early in the half. Starmount was able to tie the game with a goal by Jesus Alveraz, but several minutes later, Wilkes Central took the lead. With time winding down in the half and the score sitting 2-1 in the Eagles’ favor, Starmount started to up its tempo. Alveraz found another breakaway and was able to knock in his second goal of the night which tied the game 2-2 at halftime.
In the second half, both teams once again came out with the intent to win. Wilkes Central and Starmount both knocked in a goal for a 3-3 game with 20 minutes left. Starmount’s third goal was scored off a penalty kick by Jonathan Flores.
As time was winding down, the Rams were able to take the momentum from the Eagles. Starmount started winning every ball out of the air and kept its passes clean. With 11:53 left in the game, the Rams were able to beat Wilkes Central’s defense. Carlos Velasquez and Alveraz both had looks at the goal, but it was Alveraz who knocked in his third goal of the night which gave Starmount a 4-3 lead.
With the score in their favor, the Rams started to play tactfully on defense. With five seconds left in the game, the Eagles picked up a free kick from 35 yards out. Wilkes Central was unable to get the ball past Starmount’s defense, and the Rams took a 4-3 win over the Eagles.
Starmount 8 – Elkin 0
The Rams were back in action again on Wednesday night, this time against the Elkin Buckin’ Elks. Although the Rams has played a hard game the night before, the home team was able to come out and take an 8-0 win over Elkin.
It took 24 minutes for the first Starmount goal to reach the net, as Velasquez crashed the goal for the first goal of the night. Less than a minute later, Marlon Mejia dribbled the ball into the net for a 2-0 Starmount lead.
The Rams kept up their tempo with their third goal of the night 42 seconds after the second goal. Flores was set up near the top of the box and was able to one touch his shot into the net.
Starmount kept crashing the goal as the fourth goal of the night came with 14:33 left on the clock. The Rams were awarded a corner, and as the ball was soaring through the air, Colby Macemore was able to put his head on the ball for a 4-0 Starmount lead.
The Rams almost had a 5-0 lead at halftime, as Macemore hit a rocket shot from the left side of the net. Elkin’s keeper, went for the diving save and kept the score 4-0.
In the second half, Starmount knocked in four additional goals to take an 8-0 win over the Buckin’ Elks. The final four goals were scored by Flores, Macemore, Leo Najera and Estevan Zamora.
With the two wins, Starmount remains undefeated in the MVAC with a record of 8-0. Overall the Rams have a record of 9-6. Starmount will travel to Alleghany on Monday, and host East Wilkes on Wednesday.
