RONDA — The East Wilkes volleyball team hosted West Wilkes last week for a Mountain Valley Athletic Conference match. The Cardinals have struggled this season, as they have lost four matches in a row. On Thursday night, the Cardinals stuck with West Wilkes, but the visiting Blackhawks were able to sweep East Wilkes 3-0 for the win (25-17, 25-5, 25-21).
East Wilkes was able to put together a strong first set, with kills by Aubri Smithey and Corey Spicer. Aubrey Wallis was able to give East Wilkes a point as she put down kill from the left side for the Cardinals. East Wilkes was able to tie the first set 14-14, as Brooke Ward pushed the ball to the corner and found an open area of the court.
The Cardinals then took the lead, as Monica Shaver served an ace for a 15-14 East Wilkes lead. West Wilkes did not let the Cardinals capitalize on the lead, as the Blackhawks were able to put together a rally to take a 19-15 lead. From there, the set was all about West Wilkes as it took a 25-17 win over East Wilkes.
The second set was a struggle for the Cardinals, as they only scored five points. The five lone points came from three West Wilkes mistakes, a kill by Tara Shaw and a free ball hit by Kaybree Martin. West Wilkes went on a 12-point rally to take a 25-5 win over East Wilkes.
Things were a little better for the Cardinals in the third set, but the Blackhawks were once again able to take the win. East Wilkes started off with a 5-0 lead as Wallis had two aces in a row, then Smithey had two kills. East Wilkes held on to the lead until West Wilkes was able to tie the game, 15-15. The Blackhawks then took the lead and never looked back as they took a 25-21 win over East Wilkes in the third set.
With the loss, East Wilkes moves to 2-13 overall and 2-7 in the MVAC. The Cardinals travel to Starmount on Tuesday and host Alleghany on Thursday.
