RONDA — The Elkin Lady Elks volleyball team traveled six miles up the road to take on the Lady Cardinals of East Wilkes on Tuesday night. Elkin was able to put down three set wins in a row to sweep East Wilkes, 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-18).

Elkin came out with an upbeat tempo in the first set, and the Lady Elks never once faltered on their way to a victory. Carolina Cason put down the first kill of the night, as Catie Beth Brown set up a perfect ball to the middle. Cason was able to place the kill in an open area of the court, and Elkin had a 1-0 lead over East Wilkes.

From there, the set was all about the blue and white. Chloe Osborne had several key digs on the back row which found the hands of Brown. Kathryn Jennings was able to give Elkin a 6-1 lead with a kill down the left line, which was followed up with another kill by Jennings.

Elkin had a 13-10 lead over East Wilkes when the set started to lean more towards the visiting team. Cason came up with a block, then a kill, then another block and another kill to give Elkin a 22-15 lead. In the second and third sets, East Wilkes came out with the lead, but the Lady Elks were able to battle back to take the win. East Wilkes was able to take an early lead in the first set as Aubrey Wallis and Aubri Smithey had kills from the front row. East Wilkes had a 3-2 lead, but it would be its last lead of the set as the Lady Elks came charging back. Jennings tied the set with a kill, then an out hit by East Wilkes gave the Elks a 4-3 lead. The rest of the set was all about the Elks as they came away with a 25-14 win.

Once again in the third set, the Lady Cardinals were able to jump out to a lead. East Wilkes was able to blank Elkin with a 3-0 lead. Smithey hammered the ball from the middle hitter’s position to give East Wilkes a 2-0 lead, then Tara Shaw knocked down a kill for the 3-0 lead.

Elkin was able to break the home team’s rally as Brown had an ace from the service line. The third set continued on in a back-and-forth battle, as East Wilkes tried to make the match head to a fourth set. Elkin was able to break away from East Wilkes as Laken Edwards knocked down a kill for a 20-13 Elkin lead. From there, it was all about the Lady Elks as they were able to come up with a 25-18 win.
