DOBSON — Psychology instructor Heather Willard of Pilot Mountain is introducing a new psychology class this summer at Surry Community College.
PSY 243 Child Psychology provides an overview of physical, cognitive and psychosocial development from conception through adolescence. Class topics will include theories and research, interaction of biology and environmental factors, language development, learning and cognitive processes, social relations, and moral development.
Upon completion, students should be able to identify typical and atypical childhood behavioral patterns, as well as appropriate strategies for interacting with children.
The class will be offered seated on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on the Dobson campus, as well as an online format, from May 21 through Aug. 6.
“PSY 243 is an excellent course for anyone to take who plans to work in a childcare field such as counseling, teaching or coaching,” Willard said.
The course has been approved as a transfer class under the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement as a pre-major/elective course, which means that Surry Community College students who are transferring to a four-year university will earn credit for this class toward their four-year degree.
