As the school year winds down, the excitement for teacher of the year rose to the forefront, mainly due to the fact that Starmount High School has recently named its new recipient of this honor, Rocky Horton, math teacher and coach.

Elizabeth Pozo interviewed Coach Horton after the announcement was made. Below are his thoughts on the matter.

Pozo: When did you learn that you had been voted in as teacher of the year?

Horton: Mr. Hemric came by my room to let me know. Then he announced it on the intercom.

Pozo: How did you feel at that moment?

Horton: Thankful and appreciative.

Pozo: What are some characteristics that you feel qualify a person for this honor?

Horton: Same characteristics as most teachers… [they] care about their students, help them try to be successful and motivate them to do their best.

Pozo: Is there another level you can reach, like a district or regional achievement?

Horton: Possibly, that’s up to others to decide.

Pozo: Are you excited or nervous about the next round?

Horton: Both. [I’m] excited because it’s a new and different challenge, which is also why I’m nervous. I suppose not knowing what questions they’ll ask makes me more nervous. All I know to do is be myself.

Pozo: Do you have any words for the staff at Starmount for voting for you?

Horton: Thank you for the honor. I’m very fortunate to work with a great family of teachers at Starmount.
