Two Wilkes men charged in separate cases

A Moravian Falls man is facing charges in Wilkes County following an alleged abuse incident involving a woman and child from Boonville.

Corey Ray Abernathy, 24, of 182 Oak Valley Drive, was charged on Dec. 7 with intentional child abuse causing serious bodily injury and assault on a female, according to Wilkes arrest records.

According to the incident report, the victims, a 20-year-old Boonville woman and her 2-year-old son, reported the abuse during a visit to Wilkes Regional Medical Center on Dec. 6. “It was found that she had been the victim of domestic violence, and her son, had suffered bruises, lacerations, welts, and burns over a large portion of his body,” reported sheriff’s deputy Brandon Robinson.

The victims reported the incident occurred at Abernathy’s residence.

Also reported in December was the arrest of a Charlotte man for an alleged sexual assault incident.

Hector Anthony Herrera, 22, was charged on Dec. 7 with first-degree sex offense with a child and indecent liberties, according to the arrest report.

According to the incident report, the parents of the minor child victim alleged Herrera forced their child to perform oral sex on the offender at his former residence in North Wilkesboro. The incident occurred between May of 2013 and October of 2013, and was reported on Oct. 23 this year.
