The Elkin town government offices will have new phone numbers going into effect Oct. 1.
Town Manager Brent Cornelison said the phone system the town has been using was a voice-over internet program, which was going to require an upgrade to the town’s bandwidth and other changes that were going to cost additional money.
Rather than making what Cornelison called “costly upgrades” to make the existing system operate properly, the town staff decided to switch providers to Surry Communications. “Once we pay for the new hardware, we will see pretty good savings on that,” he said.
In changing providers, the town has to switch phone numbers because the existing numbers, which were Winston-Salem prefixes, won’t transport from company to company. The new numbers will be local prefixes.
“I hate we had to change numbers,” said Cornelison.
From now through Sept. 30, town officials can be reached at the 794 prefix numbers or the new numbers, but as of Oct. 1, only the new numbers will be operational.
Another advantage of the new system is when people call town hall after hours or on weekends, an answering service will direct them to specific departments and employees, something that wasn’t available on the previous system.
The new town hall number, effective Oct. 1, is 336-258-8900. Other new department numbers are police department dispatch, 336-258-8910; recreation and parks, 336-258-8917; public works, 336-258-8915; and fire department, 336-258-8921.
