Wilkes man drowns in Yadkin River

ROARING RIVER — The body of a Wilkes County man who went missing after falling from a canoe Friday on the Yadkin River was found Monday afternoon.

Damien Jamal Mayes, 25, of Boomer, was canoing in the Roaring River area of Wilkes County Friday at about 4 p.m. when he fell out of the canoe he was in with friend, Corin Omar Palmer, 26, of Millers Creek. According to the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, Mayes had removed his life jacket and shirt when he fell overboard and was unable to swim.

Emergency crews searched for Mayes on shore and on the river Friday evening, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Mayes’ body was found about 2 p.m. Monday not far from where he went in the river, according to officials.

A number of emergency crews were involved in the weekend search, including the Roaring River Fire Department, Ronda Fire Department, Wilkes County Rescue Squad, Elkin Rescue Squad and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
