Staff Report

RONDA — A student at East Wilkes High School is facing charges after an incident that led to a lockdown on campus Wednesday morning.

According to Chief Deputy David Carson with the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, school personnel were disciplining a 16-year-old male student “when he became irate and began punching the wall.” The incident occurred just after 10 a.m.

Carson said the student resource officer and school staff were able to get the student under control. He was checked out by Wilkes County EMS personnel and then charged.

The student, who has not yet been identified, was charged with disorderly conduct and resist a public officer.

The school was under lockdown “for a short period of time out of abundance of caution,” Carson said.
