A local convenience store is celebrating notoriety after selling one of the two winning Jackpot NC Cash 5 lottery tickets last week. West End Elkin’s Elkin Mart sold the $196,382 ticket March 1 to a local resident. The other winning ticket was sold at the Murphy Express in Goldsboro.
Up until now the largest prize that anybody had won at Elkin Mart was $500 from a scratch-off ticket. Cashier Bonnie Ford, who sold the prize-winning quick pick $1 ticket, laughed and said, “Since people have found out that I sold the winning ticket, they have bombarded me with lottery purchases … I guess they think I’m good luck now.”
Night shift cashier Dani Adkinson was present when the winner scanned his ticket and said, “He wasn’t sure how much he had won because the machine didn’t say, but he knew he won something big, so I googled the address to Raleigh for him.”
According to a release from the North Carolina Education Lottery, Edward Burleson Jr. of Elkin split the $392,764 jackpot with a winning ticket sold in Goldsboro. Any winnings under $600 may be claimed at local retailers, but those totaling more than $100,000 must be claimed in person at the NC Education Lottery office in Raleigh.
Elkin Mart owners Dipendra Giri and Chandra Giri, who bought the store in September of last year, are elated that the prize winning ticket was bought at their store. Chandra Giri said, “As a new owner of the Elkin Mart, I was thrilled to learn that one of our regular customers had won the jackpot. Our customer’s success demonstrates once more the well-known principle: you can’t win if you don’t play. Anyone who plays has a chance to win.”
The Cash 5 prize was claimed at the lottery headquarters in Raleigh, and, after taxes, the winner took home $138,453. The odds of winning are one in 749,398.
Elkin Mart is located at 798 N.C. Hwy. 268 West, Elkin.
