Submission guidelines for calendar events: One-time events may be submitted for placement in the calendar at least two weeks prior to the date of the event. Information should include date, time, place, brief description and contact information, if necessary. Calendars are published as space permits and do not run in every issue of the paper. If a submission is not showing, it is due to the chronological order of the events. Events to be included are at our discretion, and information is subject to editing. • 10 a.m., Elkin Public Library will host Book Babies for those birth to 24 months and their caregiver.

• 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the town of Elkin will host an exhibit display input session at the Yadkin Valley Heritage, Arts, and Trails Center, 257 Standard St., Elkin. The town is asking for input towards the themes and information points that should be highlighted in the first round of displays to be designed and built for placement inside and outside the center. The center will house the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce, some of Surry Community College’s cultural arts classes and serve as a gateway destination to the region. • 4 to 6 p.m., the Elkin Public Library will host an acoustic string band jam session.

• 5 to 7 p.m., the Surry Community College Fall 2017 Student Art Exhibition showcase reception will be held in the lobby of the third floor of Building J on campus, 630 S. Main St., Dobson. The exhibition will remain up through Dec. 12 showcasing artwork from students in Introduction to Drawing, 2-Dimensional Design, Painting, Ceramics and Digital Photography classes during the fall semester. • 7:30 p.m., Candlelight Christmas in Rockford will be held in the 1914 Rockford Methodist Church in the historic village of Rockford. Thursday’s service will include Dr. Gene Poovey accompanied by Adam Rudisill, CandelFirth, Kelsey Stanley, Ashley and Devin Matthews, Marshall Brothers and High Road and Surry Central High School chorus directed by Angie Smith. Friday will feature Dr. Gene Poovey accompanied by Adam Rudisill, Fiddle Dee Dee, Kelsey Stanley, Ashley and Devin Matthews, Johnny and Wendy Dearmin, Gene Anderson and Reel Shady and Limestone College chorus directed by Dr. Poovey. Refreshments are served following both programs. Shuttle van service will begin at 6:30 from the Rockford Baptist Church parking lot. Select galleries in Rockford will be open before the programs.
