Veterans were served a meal, offered free haircuts and more at an appreciation event sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Veterans Employment Services and VFW Post 7794 of Elkin on Thursday. This is the second year the event has taken place at the National Guard Armory in Elkin, said Kevin Hege, veterans employment representative.
Representatives from the Federal VA office, YVEDDI, Surry County Veterans Office and more were on hand to assist veterans and answer questions.
“Hopefully this will help them with anything they need as far as filing VA claims, pensions anything that can help them help themselves,” said Hege.
In addition to helping veterans, the event also served as a thank you for those who have served and a time for them to socialize and enjoy a meal together.
“We’re trying to build it and hopefully it will get better each time,” Hege said. “It’s an appreciation event for all veterans in the Yadkin Valley. We want to grow this every year.”
VFW Post Commander Richard Hackland spoke briefly at the event to welcome attendees and offer his thanks for their service.
“We want to thank you for all that you have done,” he said.
Hege also noted that he was available to assist any veterans who were not able to attend the event. Though his area involves employment, he said he was happy to put veterans in contact with the proper office they need if they reach out to him. Hege can be reached at 336-786-4169 ext. 207.
