In 1943, Doc and Sue Roberts became a married couple on Sept. 17 in South Carolina. Seventy-five years later, their marriage was celebrated at Chatham Nursing and Rehab in Elkin.

The couple celebrated with family, friends and staff of Chatham Nursing along with Mountain Valley Hospice staff. A cake decorated by Miranda Bachman and Walmart deli staff was presented for the couple.

The room was prepared and decorated by Lisa Ladd and Mountain Valley Hospice staff, and music from their era was played in the background. The Robertses shared their own separate table for two, which was decorated, and ate cake, talked with one another and with their visitors.

Doc Roberts said the couple “met on a tour bus and she saved me a seat … and the rest is history, and a very happy history.”
