• 6:30 p.m., the Surry County Republican Party will host a candidate meet and greet at its headquarters, 482 Mayberry Mall, Mount Airy.

June 2

• 8 to 11 a.m., Prism Medical Products will host the inaugural Throwing Shades, a 5K color fun run to benefit the Ebenezer Children’s Home and Children’s Center of Surry and Yadkin, at Elkin Municipal Park. • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Wilkes-Surry Overmountain Victory Trail Association will host a living history day in downtown Elkin in conjunction with National Trails Day. There will be musket demonstrations, dancing to colonial music, wood working, ice cream making, reenactors portraying members of the Surry Militia, children’s games and ladies in period clothing. The event is free and will be held along Big Elkin Creek across from the public library on the Overmountain Victory Trail.

• 4 to 7 p.m., Traphill Baptist Church, Austin-Traphill Road, will host a gospel singing on the lawn with featured artists, Crabgrass and Mountain Heritage. Hamburgers and hot dogs with fixings will be for sale, dine in or take out. Those attending should bring a lawn chair or blanket. In case of rain, the concert will be moved inside. June 3

• 6 p.m., Longtown Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1409 Longtown Road, Yadkinville, will host the Yadkin Valley District revival featuring IPHC National Evangelists Stephen and Kim Hoell.

June 7

• The 11th annual PVH ALS/MDA golf tournament will be held at Cedarbrook Country Club in State Road with morning and afternoon rounds. Sponsorships are still available, as are playing opportunities. The tournament began to honor PVH friend and colleague, Larry Kincaid, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2007 and died in 2013. There will be door prizes, a $1,000 raffle and other raffles. June 9

• The Northwestern Regional Library will host its seventh annual Ride for Readers to help purchase ebooks. Riders will meet at Freeborne’s Eatery and Lodge in Laurel Springs, and can include motorcycles and cars. There will be an optional Poker Run, and tickets for a 50/50 raffle and prize drawings. The day will conclude at Freeborne’s at 1:30 p.m. for lunch and live music. Deadline for advanced registration is May 2 and includes a T-shirt. • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Goodwill Career Center in Elkin will host the Novant Health Breast Cancer mobile unit offering mammograms, a preventative screening covered by most insurance plans. An appointment is required by calling Christy Martin at 336-526-2144. Those participating will need a photo ID, insurance card, copy of last images or Novant can request them and a doctor who the results can be sent to. Those who do not qualify include people breastfeeding, pregnant, with lumps or other problems, history of breast cancer, had a mammogram in the past 12 months or who have implants. There are a limited number of scholarships available.

• 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mountain Valley Hospice will host a volunteer training seminar, which is required for those wanting to volunteer with the organization. The training is free, and lunch, snacks and training materials will be provided. Finger printing and criminal background checks will be conducted on all applicants, and all volunteers must have had inoculations for flu and TB. Attendance both days is required. • A raffle drawing will be held for a $500 gift certificate from Foothills Meat Center in Jonesville. Tickets are $2 each. Proceeds benefit the YVEDDI Meals on Wheels program, with tickets available for purchase at area senior centers.

• Surrey Bank and Trust will host shred day, with all donations benefiting Helping Hands Food Pantries in the Yadkin Valley.

July 7

• 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Foothills Arts Council, 129 Church St., Elkin, will host its annual KidFest, with free activities for children.

• The 13th annual Elkin Rescue Squad charity golf tournament will be held at Cedarbrook Country Club with morning and afternoon tee times. The tournament, hosted by WIFM and Vintage Rose Wedding Estate, will be captain’s choice, with three flights, breakfast, lunch, soda, snacks, free range balls, an 11×17 individual and team photo and player goody bags. Prizes include cash for the first and second place, a longest drive, two closest to the pin holes and two hole-in-one opportunities. Sponsorships also are available.
