Surry Arts Council accepting subgrant applications

Staff Report

MOUNT AIRY — The Surry Arts Council is now accepting applications for the North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Arts Program subgrants. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on July 27. More than $10,000 will be awarded.

Since 1977, the North Carolina Arts Council’s Grassroots Arts Program has provided North Carolina citizens access to quality arts experiences. Using a per capita based formula, the program provides funding for the arts in all 100 counties of the state through partnerships with local arts councils.

Surry Arts Council serves as the North Carolina Arts Council’s partner in awarding subgrants to local organizations for arts programs in Surry County.

Applications are available for non-profit organizations whose purpose is to promote and develop diverse cultural arts programming in Surry County. Funding priority is given to qualified arts organizations (theaters, galleries, choral societies, festival), arts in education programs conducted by qualified artists, and other community organizations that provide arts programs in the county. Grassroots funds are not generally awarded to arts organizations that received funding through the N.C. Arts Council’s State Art Resources. Projects must occur between July 1, 2018, and June 30, 2019.

Application forms and grant guidelines are available on the North Carolina Arts Council website or may be picked up at the Surry Arts Council office, 218 Rockford St., Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Applications must be received at the Surry Arts Council office no later than 5 p.m. July 27.

The Surry Arts Council is hosting a Grassroots Arts Program Grant Workshop to assist interested applicants in preparing competitive grants on July 10 at 4:30 p.m. in the Andy Griffith Museum Theatre (downstairs from Andy Griffith Museum). Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend. Grant applications are evaluated by a diverse panel of community members and voted on by the Surry Arts Council Board of Directors. Awards are announced in August each year.
