RONDA - Heaven Walters has reeled off four years worth of dominating performances on the court for the Lady Rams.
But nothing compared to the senior’s offensive explosion in the final road game of her stellar high school career Tuesday night.
Walters dropped a school-record 46 points to power the Lady Rams to a thrilling 80-76 overtime victory over East Wilkes in Ronda. The Guilford College prospect also scored her 1,000th-career point in the contest on a free throw late in the third quarter.
Starmount opened fast, jumping out to a 19-8 lead after one. The young Rams pushed their advantage to 33-27 at the break on the road.
In the third, East began a furious comeback, out-scoring Starmount 18-12 in the third quarter. The Lady Cardinals grabbed an eight-point edge in the fourth period.
The Rams battled back - led by Walters - trying the game with eight seconds left on a Darion Dobson jumper to send the game to overtime tied at 63-63.
Starmount opened the extra session on a 12-5 run to take a 75-68 lead with 1:17 to play.
But, like all night, East fought back, cutting the deficit down to 75-74 late in the frame. But Walters and Randleman converted five free throws down the stretch to pull out the hard-fought 80-76 overtime victory.
Walters led Starmount’s offensive charge with 46 points, helped by converting 21-of-25 shots from the charity stripe, and 12 rebounds, setting the program’s new scoring mark. Dobson added 10 points on the night, while Randleman and Miracle Walters tacked on eight and seven points, respectively.
Erin Royal paced the Cardinals with 30 points on five treys and 12 boards, while Adrian Pardue tacked on 11 points. Ashley Hayes and McKenzie Stokes finished with eight points apiece.
Starmount pushed its conference record to 5-10 on the year, while the Cards dropped to 6-9 in league action.
Both squads return to the court Friday in their regular-season finales. The Rams will host North Wilkes on Senior Night, while East heads to Alleghany.
