ELKIN - With league play reaching the halfway mark, Elkin and Starmount are looking to establish themselves in the crowded and deep Mountain Valley Conference.

The Buckin’ Elks, who sit atop the conference standings at 7-0, are looking to remain perfect with two 1A meetings this week. The Rams, who just picked up their first conference victory last week over Alleghany, are trying to recover from a slow start with two tough matchups this week.

Elkin concludes its four-game road swing with trips to Millers Creek and Hays this week to take on 1A rivals West Wilkes and North Wilkes, respectively.

Starmount returns home for the first time since the beginning of December Tuesday night to take on East Wilkes before heading to West Wilkes Friday night.

On the girls side, both area squads are looking to bounce back from humbling losses their last time out.

The Lady Rams were trounced by conference leading North Wilkes 77-37 last Friday, while Elkin hung tough against non-conference power East Surry before falling 66-34 last Wednesday night.

Starmount fell to 2-5 in league play and is riding a four-game losing streak within the conference. The Lady Elks are still searching for that elusive first win and sit at 0-7 in MVAC action.

The Rams welcome East Wilkes to Boonville Tuesday night before traveling to West Wilkes Friday, while Elkin takes on the Lady Blackhawks Tuesday before battling unbeaten North Wilkes Friday.
