Three Elkin tennis players competed in the Greensboro Junior Futures USTA tennis tournament held on July 9-11 at Spencer Love Tennis Center in Greensboro. Ryan Schell, David Bullins, and Jeremiah Morrison all competed
with players in their own age group.
Ryan Schell played in boys 12 year old age group and won his first round and defeated number one seed Loften Deprez from Mebane. Schell made it to the third round, but was defeated by Clayton Howell, 6-2, 6-2.
David Bullins played in boys 14 year old age group. Bullins was defeated in the first round by Jaret Phillips of Winston Salem, a highly-seeded player and lost in the first round 7-5, 6-3. However, Bullins rebounded to win the first round of the consolation round, and using that momentum, continued to the consolation finals where he defeated Logan Humsucker, 6-2, 6-2.
Jeremiah Morrison played in boys 16 year old age group, where he defeated John Abram after a hard hitting match filled with long rallies. The match went to a tiebreaker where Morrison won, 7-4, 6-3. Morrison continued his momentum into the second match where he won 6-1, 6-2. The third round found Morrison, again, in a tiebreaker where he won, defeating Thomas Freeman of High Point. After finding himself down in the tie breaker, Morrison forced a comeback and won the set 6-1, 10-8. Morrison headed into the fourth round, but lost to Andrew Stevenson of Burlington, 6-1, 6-3.
Bullins and Morrison played in 16 year old doubles, which consisted of two matches. The first round, Morrison and Bullins played steadily and won their first match 8-4 (The match was eight game pro sets). The finals sent the duo into a tiebreaker after an 8-8 pro set tie. Morrison and Bullins went on to win the tiebreaker 10-8.
