The final sewer rate approved by the YVSA Board of Directors is set for a minimum bill of $14 with a 2,000 gallon allowance of water usage and $6.75 per 1,000 gallons over the minimum allowance. This rate will be the same for all three towns.
At a meeting of the YVSA board on Wednesday morning, executive director Nicole Johnston reviewed a presentation entitled, “YVSA Start-Up and Upcoming Rate Changes.” The presentation is a draft of the what citizens of Elkin, Jonesville and Ronda can soon expect to see at their respective town hall meetings.
The presentation included an statistical analysis of the authority’s new sewer rates and an explanation of how the rates were determined.
To illustrate the statistical analysis, Johnston included financial projections for an average family of four in Elkin, Jonesville and Ronda using 4,000 and 4,500 gallons of water usage, respectively. Financial estimates were calculated for the theoretical family at their current sewer rate, the YVSA rate and the “go it alone” rate. The “go it alone” rate, a term used by Elkin Town Manager Lloyd Payne, is the projection of the family’s sewer bill had the YVSA not come into effect, leaving each of the towns to make the necessary updates and improvements to their own sewer systems.
Although YVSA rates were higher in each of the towns compared to current sewer rates, estimates for the “go it alone” figures were significantly higher than the YVSA rates that residents will begin to receive next month.
The presentation also outlined the purpose of the YVSA, legalities concerning the body’s creation, board members and authority employees and emergency contact information.
The YVSA hopes to address residents in each of the communities at town hall meetings within the next two weeks.
