Byrd has been the principal at Elkin High School since 2007. A graduate of Gardner-Webb University, Byrd earned a masters degree in school administration, in 2002, with a 4.0 in graduate studies.
Previous educational degrees include a Bachelor of Science in history from Appalachian State University in 1994 and an associative arts degree from Wilkes Community College. He graduated from North Wilkes High School in 1990.
Byrd started his teaching career in 1995 at North Wilkes High School as a world history and civics teacher and served in many coaching capacities. In 2002, he became an assistant principal at West Alexander Middle School and later became assistant principal at Elkin High School in 2003. In 2005, he became the principal at North Iredell High School prior to accepting the position as principal for Elkin High School in 2007. Mr. Byrd has 15 years of service in the education profession.
Byrd stated that he “always wanted to be a part of the Elkin City Schools system culture, academics, and athletic program successes after serving as assistant principal.” Dr. Randy Bledsoe, superintendent of Elkin City Schools, described Mr. Byrd as “an instructional leader who sets high expectations and goals for his staff and students; is a collaborative leader who works well with all audiences and relies on their input for what is best for his school, and is a leader of educators who has implemented Professional Learning Communities within his school setting to better meet the needs of teachers and students in a 21st Century learning environment.”
Byrd and the Elkin High School staff were recently recognized for hosting the “Surry County Special Olympics.” Keith Fishburne, President and CEO of North Carolina Special Olympics, said about Mr. Byrd and his staff, “the Special Olympics program at Elkin High was one of the most highly organized and one of the most positive spirited events that I have experienced.”
