Starmount and Forbush high schools topped the final Wachovia Conference Cup standings in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A for the 2009-10 sports year.

The Wachovia Conference Cup award is sponsored by the N.C. High School Athletic Association and recognizes the high schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s conferences.

Points are awarded to schools based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference decides its own point system.

Starmount won the Conference Cup for the MVAC with 122 points. Forbush edged Wilkes Central for second place, 116.5 points to 116.

West Wilkes was fourth with 97.5 points, followed by Ashe County 93.5, Elkin 92.5, East Wilkes 80, Alleghany 63.5 and North Wilkes 53.5.

Starmount led after the winter season and held off Forbush and Wilkes Central thanks to a conference championship in boys track and a league runner-up finish in softball. The Rams also were strong in boys tennis, baseball and girls soccer.

Forbush won MVAC titles in girls soccer and softball and was among the league’s top finishers in baseball and track.

Wilkes Central won 2A conference titles in baseball, boys tennis (best among the 2A schools) and golf. Elkin was the second-highest finisher among the 1A schools in the MVAC.

The Buckin’ Elks went undefeated in boys tennis and earned the top 1A seed for the playoffs in girls soccer. The Elks were second to Starmount in boys track.

Bishop McGuinness won the Wachovia Conference Cup for the Northwest 1A/2A. The Villains, who won conference titles in golf and girls track, finished with 130 points, followed by West Stokes 109.5, Surry Central 102, Mount Airy 96, East Surry 89, South Stokes 85, North Surry 78, North Stokes 64.5 and Winston-Salem Prep 34.
