Opening ceremonies for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will be held at 6 p.m. at the Elkin Municipal Park tonight, (Friday).

This is the eleventh annual Relay for Life event in Elkin. There are 25 teams, most of which will be on site during the evening and night, with at least one member of each team on the walking track at all times.

“Our goal is to raise awareness and raise money,” Kelly Hembree, event chair said. “Our goal this year is $75,000. Last year we raised $72,000, and with the state of the economy we felt our goal was still achievable.”

A luminary service will be held at sunset, around 9 p.m. in honor or memory of a cancer patient.

The opening ceremonies will include a recognition lap for survivors and their teams.

“We will have speakers and music at the event also,” Hembree said. “We’ll have a band, zoombathon in the gymnasium around 8 p.m., and a lot of other activities.

“There will be food available for anyone to get for a donation to the American Cancer Society,” she said. “All cancer survivors and their families are invited to attend. Most everyone has been touched by cancer, whether with a family member or friend.

“We will pitch our tents and stay the night, rain, sleet, or snow,” Hembree said. “Cancer doesn’t stop, and neither will we in our fight for a cure.”

Anyone needing information about the relay may call Hembree at 835-9800.
