Unless you’re hiding under a rock, and who could blame anyone for that these days, you probably heard the stock market dropped by 1,000 points in less than 60 seconds yesterday.
It may turn out that someone when placing an order to purchase some Johnson & Johnson stock punched in a “B” for billions instead of an “M” for millions.
The resulting chaos on the business news channels rivaled “The Price is Right” for sheer sublime hilarity.
For five minutes, its seemed that mankind itself was on the precipice of implosion.
And yes, on its surface, the event might have one doubled over with gut-churning laughter in its sheer inanity if the errant keystroke sparked the sell-off. However, there is a larger question of the foundation of our financial markets if that is all it took to cause the huge sell-off.
Specifically, can financial Armageddon be defined as the less than one inch space between the “B” and “M” letters on a keyboard?
If so, perhaps the news media can spend more time watching what’s happening on Main Street than Wall Street to get a picture of our real economy, not the Las Vegas-style supercomputer driven market based on wild speculation instead of solid information.
• I headed out to Friendship Speedway last Saturday night. It was a great time and I highly recommend it as a great night of sound, fury and fun that is reasonably priced. However, be forewarned, spectators, like many of the racers, don’t leave the speedway with a clean, shiny ride. A fine dusting of red dirt covers everything; and I mean everything, eyes, hair, clothes, vehicles, you name it.
If you’re heading out for Saturday night’s race, wait until after church on Sunday wash the car or truck.
• A little bird, in a cherry picker, showed up in downtown Elkin Thursday and installed some new street signage, specifically new Bridge and Main Street signs. Thanks to those little birdies for installing the new signs.
• Can repairing the downtown clock be far behind?
• With the primary election over, it’s time to clean up those political candidate yard signs. They need to be gone, thankfully, my May 11.
• Don’t forget to put out non-perishable food items to be picked up by our mail carriers tomorrow. The 18th annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive is the largest one-day event in the nation and we should all do our part to offer a helping hand to those who need it.
• The Relay for Life kicks-off today at the Elkin Municipal Park. For those participating, thank you. For those who aren’t, stop by and donate a dollar, or two. Every dollar counts towards the cure.
• Happy Mother’s Day.
• I’ll see you out there.
