The Foothills Quilters are displaying quilts to call attention to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of the Foothills at 6 p.m. at Elkin Municipal Park on Friday.

Relay for Life has been a very special community event in Elkin for the past 11 years.

Supporters, team members and cancer survivors will come to the Elkin Municipal Park from all over Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin counties.

Opening ceremonies, survivors lap and special recognitions are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., and will kick off the event that is scheduled to end with a luminary ceremony.

Participating teams will have fundraisers and camp out all night in support of cancer research and awareness.

The Foothills Quilters were so very generous with their time and energy and have donated these quilts to raise much-needed funds for cancer research, according to event chairperson Kelly Hembree. The Town of Elkin employee team will display the quilts and have a silent auction throughout the night.

The Foothills Quilters have presented the Relay for Life Breast Cancer Awareness project with three quilts that will be auctioned.

The two bow tie pattern quilts, one large and one lap sized, were made by more than 20 quilters who donated pink and white fabric blocks that were then sewn together by Taffy Jordan, Barbara Monroe, Vicki Whelan, Joan Sanders and quilted by Amy Askins.

The third quilt is made of Relay for Life t-shirts and was sewn together by Carol McDowell and quilted by Sharon Neel. All materials and professional quilting were donated.

Foothills Quilters have made charity quilts one of their main projects and have provided them to The Ark, the Elkin Police Department and Elkin Fire Department.

The quilters meet on the third Tuesday of each month at the Foothills Arts Council building on Church Street. For information, call Sew Welcome, 258-2441.
