After hearing that Tri-County Christian Crisis Ministry (Tri-C) was in great need of supplies due to a long and cold winter, Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital responded.

“We wanted to raise the bar on our annual food drive,” said Warren Bates, HCMH director of Food, Environmental Services and Safety.  The hospital’s dietary and environmental services departments devised a ‘food drive competition’ among its departments, calling it the “Stop Hunger Food Drive Competition.”  The competitors were divided into three equally numbered groups of employees, with an overall goal of collecting 1,500 items.

However, at the end of the week long drive, an astonishing 6,000 items totaling 2 ½ tons of food, had been collected.

The winning team, called “The Achievers,” was comprised of employees working outside the Hospital.  The Achievers boasted significant contributions from the Nursing Center, Parkwood Place Retirement Center, Yadkin Valley Home Health and Yadkin Valley Adult Medicine.  This team collected over 3,200 items.  They have won a special dessert party in the near future, compliments of the Hospital Dietary Department.

“Our hope is that Hugh Chatham employees have helped sustain Tri-C’s food stores until their next big food drive,” said Warren Bates.  The next food drive to benefit Tri-C is conducted by the Elkin Post Office around the Mother’s Day holiday.  The Hospital encourages the community to support this drive.

Tri-C has many fulfilling volunteer opportunities available.  They also accept non-perishable food items and hygiene products on Mondays from 1-4 and Wednesdays and Fridays from 9-12.  Located at 134 Bluff Street in Jonesville, and can be reached at 526-1089.

"This is the Hospital's second annual food drive and we look forward to doing it again next year."
