SALEM, Va. — Despite another monster performance from Elkin High graduate Tyler Sanborn, Guilford College came up short in its bid to advance to the NCAA Division III men’s basketball championship game.
Sanborn scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds Friday night, but the Quakers still lost to Williams College (Mass.) 97-88 in the national semifinal match-up at the Salem Civic Center. Williams scored a whopping 62 points in the second half, making 70.4 percent of its shots. The Ephs swished 16 three-pointers for the game.
Guilford ends what has been its best season since moving to NCAA Division III with a 30-3 record. Williams lost to Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Saturday’s title game, 78-73.
Sanborn, a senior center, recorded his 30th double-double of the season. Rhett Bonner of Yadkinville, a North Forsyth graduate who also played at Forbush, finished with 15 points, including 12 in the second half.
Two Bonner free throws trimmed Williams’ lead to 85-82 with 1:09 remaining. Williams hit eight free throws in the last 42 seconds to hold off the Quakers. Like Sanborn, Bonner also is a senior.
Guilford led 43-35 at halftime thanks to a 22-2 run late in the opening stanza.
Yadkinville’s Gabriel Lowder, a sophomore, played 10 minutes in Friday’s game but did not score. He did have two steals. Sophomore Eric High of Dobson did not play in the semifinal game.
