The commissioners accepted an invitation to hold the meeting there. It will begin at the regular 6 p.m. timeslot.
Shortly after 6 p.m., Dr. Randy Bledsoe, Elkin City Schools superintendent, will come before the board with a school facilities request.
Then Kim Bates, county planning director, will come before the board for the reconsideration of a rezoning request in Pilot Mountain. The request by Howard Lichtenberger was to rezone a one-acre lot at the southwest corner of Old Westfield Road and Matthews Road for the purpose of establishing a sports bar. At a commissioners meeting one month ago, the board was presented with a petition signed by 50 people against the sports bar. After comments from community members opposed to and in favor of the bar, the commissioners tabled the issue until a later meeting.
After the zoning discussion, Michael Hartgrove, tax administrator, will give a tax update to the board. At the planning retreat last month, Hartgrove reported that the percentage of taxes collected by February of this year was 92.1 percent of the total amount owed, down from 94.7 percent the previous year at this time.
Hartgrove then said, “Will we get last year’s percentage? I don’t know. It will be pretty hard. We have a lot of new delinquencies this year.”
Special recognitions will be given at 7 p.m., then the commissioners will take a break. Chris Knopf, assistant county manager for economic development and tourism, will speak to the board around 7:30 p.m. about site recertification at Elkin Corporate Park and the progress of the agriculture aggregation center in Pilot Mountain. Last week Knopf said that Pilot Mountain Pride, the new center, should be completely up and running some time in May.
The meeting will conclude with general business from the county manager and commissioners and a closed session for legal matters. After coming out of closed session, the commissioners will recess until March 30, when a school of government water and sewer presentation will be held.
Members of the public are welcome to attend regular meetings of the Surry County Board of Commissioners. The location of Elkin High School is 334 Elk Spur Street in Elkin.
Any person with a disability needing an accommodation at the meeting should call the county manager’s office at 401-8201. Elkin residents should call 366-8201.
