A group of athletes from Tribune area schools won't be going for the gold Saturday after all. They'll pursue state championship medals next week instead.
The N.C. High School Athletic Association announced early Friday afternoon that the 1A/2A state swim championships and the 1A/2A/3A state indoor track championships have been postponed.
The state swim meet, originally set for Saturday, has been moved to Monday. The site still will be the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary. The prelims will go in the morning, with the finals slated for 5 p.m.
Two Elkin swimmers, Lakenn Reynolds and Sarah Singleton, are favored to win individual events. An Elkin girls relay also has a top seed. A number of other swimmers from Elkin, Starmount, Surry Central, Forbush and North Wilkes have a chance to medal, place and/or score points for their schools.
The state indoor track finale has been moved from this Saturday to next Saturday, Feb. 20 in Chapel Hill. Starmount's Aaron Combs is the top seed in the 500 meters.
The NCHSAA postponed both meets because of the threat of more wintry weather around the state, forecast to begin late Friday night and into Saturday. Snow cancellations have been a frequent occurrence this winter. The region swim meet was canceled last weekend because of icy, snowy conditions.
