She was born in Allegany County to the late Oscar and Polly Crouse Medley on Nov. 26, 1912.

The Lord was her Shepherd…and she will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

A prayer warrior went home on Sunday.

Bessie Norman, known to many as Ma Bessie, was a blessing to her family, her friends and her church, for she fought many battles on her knees.

We will miss her and her prayers.

Mrs. Norman was a member of Charity Hill Baptist Church and was retired from Roses in Elkin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Raymond Norman; two daughters, Edna Aileen Norman and Diris Hayes; two sons-in-law, James Shores and Bob Hayes; one grandson, Dennis Harrison Shores; two sisters, Ruby Norman and May Evans; and one brother, Worth Medley.

Surviving are her two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Lonnie Swaim of State Road and Wanda and Foy Loyd, also of State Road; five grandchildren, Judy Newman (and husband Mike), Jimmy Dale Shores (and wife Kay), James Harrison Shores Jr. (and wife Michelle), Robin Hayes-Lake (and husband John) and Angela L. Henley (and husband Danny); 12 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Underwood and Edith Medley of Ennice.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Charity Hill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

The Rev. Brian Cardwell, the Rev. Danny Henley and the Rev. Mickey Brooks will officiate the service.

The family will receive friends at Charity Hill Baptist Church from 12:30-2 p.m. prior to the time of her service. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at other times at the home of her daughter, Wanda Loyd, 1868 Mountain Park Road, State Road, NC 28676.
