DOBSON -- Surry Central's boys basketball team had to weather another comeback Wednesday night against Elkin, though this one wasn’t quite as furious as Tuesday’s by South Stokes
The Golden Eagles held off the Buckin' Elks 61-56.
Surry Central (8-3) added to its nine-point halftime lead with a 26-point third quarter. The lead held despite the Buckin’ Elks’ 16-9 advantage in the final frame.
“We missed some layups and we missed a bunch of free throws,” Surry Central coach Ken Eiswald said of his team’s fourth-quarter offense, adding that the execution was there. Central was 5-of-12 from the free-throw line in the fourth.
Jake Levesque had a big night with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Ethan Wilmoth had 17 points and Dave Wilmoth added 15. Eiswald said his squad’s rebounding played a role in the victory.
“One of the big keys is we went hard to the offensive glass,” he said. “We couldn’t hit some shots, but we did a good job of hitting the glass and giving ourselves extra opportunities.”
Jermaine Hayes scored 15 points to lead Elkin. Sam Lane added 13 and Damon Smith dropped in 10.
