Starmount junior Jake Barr has been named to the NCPreps.com 2A all-state team.

Barr, who was voted the offensive MVP of the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference, was selected to the NCPreps all-state team as a defensive back.

Barr is the only MVAC player on the list among 2A schools. Four defensive backs were chosen.

Barr, who made all-conference on both sides of the ball, posted an impressive defensive resume. He made 59 solo tackles and recorded five tackles for loss. He intercepted eight passes, returning one for a touchdown. He caused seven fumbles and returned a fumble for a TD.

Barr was The Tribune’s recent pick for Overall MVP of its 2009 All-Area football team.

Casey Randolph of Mountain Heritage is the 2A player of the year. Reidsville’s Doug Robertson was the 2A coach of the year.

Starmount finished the season 10-3, 8-0 in the MVAC. The Rams lost in the second round of the state playoffs to Lexington.

Mount Airy, which finished as the 1A state runner-up, put three players on the NCPreps.com 1A all-state team. Justin Collier made the list as a wide receiver, Tyler Hull as a kicker and Luke Wheeler as an athlete. East Surry’s Hunter Diamont also was 1A all-state as an athlete.

The 1A player of the year was David Gurganus of Princeton. Wallace-Rose Hill, which upset Mount Airy in the state title game, had its coach, Joey Price, selected as the top coach for 1A.

Price also was the coach of the year for NCPreps’ all-state team for all classifications. Wallace-Rose Hill turned around from a two-win team in 2008 to state champs in 2009.

Jake has always been OUR MVP !

He's just like our brother (his Grandfather Jess Coleman) and "Big Daddy" would have been so PROUD of Jake, had he lived ! He taught Jake and Alex all they know about sports.

Watch out Tribune.....there's another MVP on the rise.....Jake's younger brother Alex, will be MVP in baseball, I guarantee it.

It's naturally in their blood !

We dearly love our great-nephews and know they will accomplish great things in their careers as excellent sportsmen.
