WINSTON-SALEM — Kelli Bonner scored 29 points, and Starmount’s girls basketball team beat Carver 52-47 in the third place game of the Mary Garber Holiday Classic on Tuesday night at Atkins High School.
The Rams fell behind early but forged a 24-20 halftime advantage. Heaven Walters added 12 points for Starmount, which bounced back after falling to top-seeded Mount Tabor 64-45 in Monday’s semifinals.
Other scorers for Starmount in Tuesday’s contest included Maygan Baldwin 5, Olivia Gough 4 and Chelsey Smith 2.
Coach Kyle Hutchens team placed fourth in the Garber tournament last season. This year, the Rams went 2-1 in the event, beating North Forsyth in the opener on Saturday.
Bonner, who netted 80 points in the three games, made the all-tournament team. She scored 24 against Mount Tabor and 27 against North Forsyth.
Reynolds knocked off Tabor late Tuesday night 51-42 to win the Garber championship. Whitney Knight, a former Bishop McGuinness standout familiar to teams in this area, was named the tournament MVP. She scored 16 points in Tuesday’s triumph.
Starmount hung with Tabor for much of the opening half Monday, trailing 14-13 after one period. But Tabor began pulling away in the second quarter, taking a 35-26 lead into the break.
An 18-8 surge by the Demons in the third quarter put things virtually out of reach for the Rams. Olivia Gough also reached double figures in scoring for Starmount, with 11 points. Walters scored five points.
The Rams will play again Dec. 1, traveling to West Wilkes.
