The high school state soccer playoffs begin this week, and four teams from The Tribune/Yadkin Ripple coverage area will be in the field.
Here's the lineup:
• Elkin will play in the 1A brackets, traveling to Bishop McGuinness for starters. The game will be Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. in Kernersville. The Elks (9-12-0) and Villains (10-9-1) were conference partners for several years, often duking it out for Northwest 1A supremacy, until this year's realignment put them in separate leagues.
Bishop is the top 1A team from the new Northwest 1A/2A. Elkin finished as the No. 2 team from the 1A ranks in the new Mountain Valley 1A/2A.
• Surry Central (19-2) will host Newton-Conover (10-13-0) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the 2A playoffs. The Golden Eagles, ranked eighth in the state, won the Northwest 1A/2A. Their only losses this season came top-ranked Forbush and 4A Mallard Creek.
• Starmount (14-4-1) will host Brevard (5-11-2) in the 2A playoffs. The Rams finished second in the MVAC behind Wilkes Central.
• Forbush (14-8-0) will travel to Polk County (15-4-0) in its 2A playoff opener. Game time and day had not been announced as of early Monday.
The Falcons are still ranked No. 1 in the state. Forbush is undefeated on the field this season but had eight early season wins taken away due to using an ineligible player.
