ELKIN- Sharon Lee Smoker, age 60, passed away Oct. 28, 2009 at her residence on Austin Traphill Road.

Once upon a time, in a galaxy not unlike our own, there was born a beautiful soul, Sharon.

The year was 1949, in the month of June, on the 18th day.

She found her way to Elkin, where she helped raise her brother, Ronald McBride, who is now passed on and her sister, Susan Church (Gary) of Ronda.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Martin Frye and Carlene Payne Frye.

Along the way, she attended East Wilkes High, Wilkes Community College, and the School of Hard Knocks, graduating with honors.

Before long, she was endowed with the care of two children, Amber Dawn Shreve (Edward) of Elkin and Christopher Martin Smoker (Regina Ann) of Sparta.

The years went on, Sharon found her calling – nursing.

She loved to care for others, and she was good at it. She gave most of her life to caring for others. When she could, she would travel. She and her best friend, Kat, went often to the beach, and it was one of her favorite places to be.

She loved the enormity of the ocean. She also loved to take her granddaughter, Jessica LeeAnne Smoker, on trips and show her some of the wonders of the world. She shared lots of wisdom with her and her grandson, Andrew Jonathan Bealor, and loved them dearly.

She gave much love to her nephew and niece, Brian and Lori Church. Special love went to her precious dog, Gallagher. As her body started giving out, her mind was always active.

She loved to watch science fiction and horror movies. She collected them and would watch them over and over. For the past two years, Mom found another love, acting. She loved to act and dress up.

She was a “Hacker” till the end, and will always be revered as the “The Dead Hatter." Her final curtain call had a small but loving audience.

I can just see her now, taking a bow and smiling - in no pain. The performance of this life was over.

The memorial service will be on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Michael Osborne.
