ELKIN- Our mother, Mrs. Lois Lorene Hall Southard, 83, of Elkin, loving wife to Mr. S.M. Southard Jr. for more than 60 years, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009 at Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home after a long term illness, as her loving family gathered by her bedside.

Mother was born on Dec. 4, 1925 in Stokes County to the late Powell Henry and Ruby Bennett Hall.

She was retired from Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, and was a devoted member of Mulberry Primitive Baptist Church.

Mother was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Lee Southard, and is survived by her devoted husband, S.M. Southard Jr. of their home; a son, Tommy Hall Southard and wife, Selena Southard, of Elkin.

She was the proud grandmother of three grandchildren, Veronica Lee Southard Sales and husband, Chance Sales, and Travis Ellis Southard, all of Elkin, and Sarah Smoot; two great-grandchildren, Kimberlee Southard of Elkin, and Brandon Dewitt-Thomas Smoot of State Road. Mother was the oldest of 12 children. Those who preceded her in death were brothers, W.R. “Bill” Hall, husband of Barbara Hall of Elkin, Lonnie Dean Hall, and wife, Brenda, and also brothers Richard and Jackie.

Surviving are brothers, John R. Hall and wife, Fran, Gray Hall and wife, Senia, Wallace Hall and wife, Sonia, all of Elkin; sisters, Helen White and husband, C.L., Shirley and husband, Rudy, and Carolyn Williams, all of Elkin, and sister Susie Hayes and husband, O.D., of Snody Daisy, Tenn.; numerous nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews and great-grand-nieces and nephews; special friends, Carol and Buster Southard of Elkin, and Rudy and Shirley Southard; special friends, Carol and Buster Southard of Elkin, and Rudy and Shirley Southard. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 23, in the chapel of Moody-Davis Funeral Home by Elder Alvin Hill, Bro. Blain Oakley, Bro. Donald Ballard and Dr. Carl Childs with burial to follow in the Mulberry Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to the Mulberry Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o S. M. Southard, 228 Mulberry Church Road, Elkin, NC 28621. The family received friends Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Moody-Davis Funeral Home.

The family would to express their heart-felt appreciation to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, especially to Tonya, Molly, Shannon and Stephanie, for their compassionate love and care during this difficult time.
