While high school football teams still have another week to go before their first kickoff, younger gridiron players from Elkin, Yadkin County and Wilkes County will get their seasons started this weekend.

The Sertoma youth football campaign begins with a full slate of games on Saturday evening. The season will continue until the end of October.

Sertoma football will have a different look and feel this fall. The addition of Starmount and Forbush middle schools in Yadkin County has changed the structure of the league somewhat in the oldest division.

In years past, Yadkin County had five different football “clubs” — Jonesville, Boonville, West Yadkin, East Bend and Yadkinville. Each club had teams for the Junior Pee Wees division (third- and fourth-grades), Pee Wees division (fifth- and sixth-grades) and Midgets division (seventh- and eighth-grades).

Now Yadkin will be represented by only two Midget teams, Starmount and Forbush. There will continue to be five Junior Pee Wee teams in the county but only four Pee Wee teams because Jonesville did not have enough players to field their own this year. Jonesville has joined Boonville in Pee Wee action.

The changes made scheduling more complex. Two Ashe County teams will join the league in the middle school division only, and some middle school games will now be played on Tuesday nights.

Game times also have been moved up an hour. The Junior Pee Wees will typically start at 4 p.m. now (instead of 5 p.m.). Jonesville games, because there is no Jonesville Pee Wee team, will start at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday night Midget games will begin at 6:30 p.m.

A middle school version of the Battle of the Bridge will usher in the new Sertoma season on Saturday. Starmount Middle’s first football game will be played at Elkin. Forbush Middle will play its first game at West Wilkes.

Aug. 29 will another big rivalry day. East Wilkes while visit Elkin, while Forbush Middle will travel to Starmount.

Other headliner games for this Saturday include East Wilkes traveling to North Wilkes in all three divisions, Jonesville playing Elkin’s Junior Pee Wees and Boonville playing West Yadkin in Pee Wee action.

The rest of the Saturday schedule includes Alleghany at Wilkes Central (all three divisions), East Bend at West Wilkes (Junior Pee Wees and Pee Wees) and Ashe County “A” playing Ashe County “B” (Midgets).
