Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital proudly announces that the Chatham Foundation has given a grant of $250,000 to help support the current building project and the Sharing the Vision Campaign. “If there is any family that understands our Vision of what excellent healthcare for the Yadkin Valley can be, it is the Chatham family,” said Stuart Poston, Interim CEO of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital.
In the 1930’s Mr. Hugh Chatham promised the land and with donations from The Duke Endowment, the Western Methodist Conference, Chatham Manufacturing Company and local citizens, the first hospital was built on Hawthorne Road in Elkin. In the late 1960’s, Hugh and R. T. Chatham’s generosity lead to the creation of the current hospital on Parkwood Drive. The legacy of the Chatham name is strongly connected with healthcare in our Yadkin Valley area.
The significance of the Chatham legacy is not lost on the present generation of the Chatham family. In addition to personal and family generosity, the Chatham Foundation continues to play a major role in the growth and expansion of the hospital named for their patriarch.
In announcing this grant, Lucy Chatham, Executive Director of the Chatham Foundation commented, “The trustees of the Chatham Foundation are so pleased to be a part of this wonderful project which will benefit not only those who receive outstanding care from the hospital but will also benefit our entire community through jobs provided and increased services.” The Chatham Foundation has always provided support for those local projects that will enhance the quality of life in Elkin and the surrounding area.
“We are fortunate to have the Chatham Foundation in our community,” said Dr. Jim Harrell, Chairman of the Sharing the Vision Campaign. “They are quick to recognize a true need in our community and are equally quick to take steps to meet that need.”
