Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital CEO Stephen Pennington will leave Elkin July 15 to become President and CEO of Gadsden Regional Medical Center in Gadsden, Ala.

“It’s very hard to leave a great organization where we’ve made real progress in building a healthier community. I know that with the opening of the expanded regional cancer center and new patient tower/ER/ICU this year, Hugh Chatham is positioned for a very successful future,” Pennington said.

He joined Hugh Chatham as CEO in January 2007.

Board of Trustees Chairman Mike Stanley praised Pennington’s accomplishments.

“Under Stephen’s leadership, the hospital’s market share has grown and patient satisfaction levels are remarkably high because we’ve built such a solid team of individuals committed to our hospital.” Stanley said. “We have a strong medical staff and we’re about to complete the largest building project in the hospital’s history. We’re sorry to see Stephen go, but wish him well.”

Stuart Poston will serve as interim CEO until the position is filled. Poston served as interim CEO for six months in 2006, immediately preceding Pennington.

“Stuart is a seasoned leader who helped to launch our construction projects. He will keep Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital moving forward as Our Region’s Choice for Technology and Care,” said Stanley.

A national search for a new CEO has already begun, conducted by Alliant Management Services. A new leader is expected to be in place within six months.
